Even before their Sunday game was halfway, the San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Marquise Goodwin suffered a huge hit to his head executed by Blake Countess, the Rams defensive back. The 49ers’offensive tackle Joe Staley, who only saw his teammate lying helpless while struggling to rise up, started calling for their emergency personnel as he hurried towards Goodwin. According to 49ers injury report, the concussion would end the receiver’s further contribution to the 49ers team this season because the concussion looked more serious.

San Francisco medical personnel rushed Goodwin to a local hospital so that they could carry out a “precautionary evaluation” tests on him, which gathered positive feedback. After the game, coach Kyle Shanahan said that Marquise Goodwin only suffered a mild concussion that caused no further damage, according to the 49ers Injury report. He even managed to sneak his way to the locker room to the delight of his teammates after the 34-13 win. On the other hand, the Rams have confirmed that Countess is also following the concussion protocol since he was injured too.
In the early moments of the second quarter, QB Jimmy Garoppolo sliced a pass to Goodwin. A few yards away Countess had already seen the play and as he charges forward, he hits Goodwin's head who already had the ball, as stated by the 49ers Injury Report. Garoppolo angrily exclaimed that such dangerous and dirty plays are not good in football even though they are allowed to happen.
For a few minutes, doctors and trainers surrounded Goodwin as he still lied on the ground. He managed to sit upright, but the medical personnel used their hands to stabilize his back and neck before being lifted away on a cart. As the training staff took him to the locker room, safety Adrian Colbert held his hand to reassure him that he will be fine. Shanahan also said that he was happy that the wide receiver could talk and his eyes were open. Before this injury, Goodwin suffered another concussion on Oct. 1 when they were playing against Arizona. Before disappearing in the tunnel, the former Olympian waved to the crowd and pounded his chest multiple times to show that he is still strong.
Goodwin’s departure seemed to have fired up the San Francisco offense who scored immediately. Garoppolo executed a handoff to running back Carlos Hyde at the 8-yard line, which seemed to make him lose momentum. However, he pushed forward to the end zone to lead their opponents with a distant 20-3. The running back said that they took everything personal because Countess hit Goodwin unnecessarily.
This season has been very difficult for the wide receiver after his wife suffered pregnancy complications that led to the death of his unborn son early in the season. Before taking on the Tennessee Titans, his biological father passed on. Amidst all this, Goodwin continued to play impressively well in the subsequent weeks. Before the concussion ended his season, Marquise Goodwin had recorded a TD as well as two catches for 28 yards. In summary, the wide receiver ends the 2017 season with 56 catches, 962 receiving yards and 2 TDs, which is a career high.
Jimmy Garoppolo on the Blake Countess hit that knocked out Marquise Goodwin: "Unbelievable that the safety did that. It's just not good. It's not good for our sport. It's not good for anybody. It's a dirty play." #49ers— Daniel Brown (@mercbrownie) January 1, 2018
