49ers Will Struggle Without Garoppolo
When San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo went down with an ACL injury, many 49ers fans felt their season, which had started with a lot of optimism, was essentially over because the quarterback that was supposed to lead them back into the playoffs was done for the season.
Despite the loss of Garoppolo, there was still a little hope that the season might not end as badly as some thought because backup quarterback C.J. Beathard was in his second year in head coach Kyle Shanahan’s system and the team decided to hand the reigns over to him instead of signing a free agent or trading for another quarterback.
The 49ers had a great chance of winning their second game of the season with the winless Arizona Cardinals in town. Despite running more plays, gaining more yards, controlling the clock, and playing better defense, the 49ers lost at home to the Cardinals, who got their first win of the season.
The loss to the Cardinals was due to the 49ers doing a terrible job protecting the ball, turning it over five times, which the Cardinals took advantage of.
With the loss, the 49ers dropped to 1-4 for the season and look like they will be competing for the first pick in next year’s draft, instead of competing for a playoff spot like they had hoped during the offseason.
With the Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Rams coming up on the schedule, the 49ers will likely be 1-6 after playing those games.
Last season, Garoppolo made a 1-10 team look like a playoff contender when he took over the starting job, but this season, it doesn’t look like the 49ers will have anyone to pull them out of their current funk.
When Garoppolo was in the lineup, the entire team played better. The offensive line did a great job blocking, their running backs were picking up yards, and their defense was also keeping them in games.
With Garoppolo out, all the team’s weaknesses are starting to show, and from what we have seen, the 49ers are not a legitimate playoff team.
From what we have seen so far, general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have a lot of work to do before the 49ers can return to their past glory.
With the team likely to finish with one of the worst records in the league, they will have a great opportunity to draft a player that can make an immediate impact on the team.
Even though they are committed to Garoppolo, he might not be the answer they were looking for at the quarterback position because he might not be able to stay healthy for an entire season. The team will not try to replace him until they see what he can do with a full season under his belt, but even when he was healthy this season, he completed 59 percent of his passes for 718 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions, which isn’t very impressive considering how much he is being paid.
The 49ers also need to get some pass rushers because their defensive line is one of the worst in the league this season. Until they fix their current problems, expect the 49ers to finish with one of the worst records in the league this year.
