49ers' long-serving center, Daniel Kilgore was initially set to join free agency. However, the latest developments confirm that he has signed a new three-year contract to continue with the Niners.
You will remember that Jimmy Garoppolo passionately endorsed Kilgore as the season ended. The center has been with the Niners since 2011. In addition to having a close working relationship with the Niners' quarterback, the center is also pleased to get a better package for the coming season. There is however another good reason why Kilgore is staying put in San Francisco.
Through a media conference call, Kilgore told the press that free agency comes with its own challenges. To begin with, one never knows what kind of players one is going to work with. He added that having a sense of brotherhood and friendship played a pivotal role in boosting his performance overall. Kilgore at 30 was the recipient of the Bobb McKittrick Award by his team in the last season. This award was to honor his dedication and courage demonstrated in his career with the Niners. This talented center can only increase the 49ers odds for next football season.
There is an obvious 'bromance' between Garoppolo and Kilgore. Since they met, they have gotten along very well on the filed and off. In fact, they are always signing praises of each other showcasing a high level of partnership and chemistry in the team. In the words of Kilgore, his play has been enhanced through the professional guidance of Garoppolo. On the other hand, Garoppolo was quick to endorse the center and this could be one of the reasons why the center's contract was extended. With unmistakable teamwork between the two, the team can only go to a higher level.
The worth of Kilgore's contract has not yet been disclosed. However, it cannot come close to Garoppolo's package signed a while ago. The Niners quarterback made history when he became the highest paid player in the NFL. The quarterback and his family were flown in from Chicago in a private jet for the grand signing of the contract. In the case of Kilgore, there was less pomp when he signed his deal. Nevertheless, he is grateful to continue working with an awesome team in San Fransisco. Kilgore will be starting his seventh year with the 49ers and he could not be more pleased.
So far, Kilgore is the third player to be re-signed by the 49ers. First, Cassius Marsh, the defensive end was given a two-year extension. Then, Garoppolo was re-signed in a historic deal. As soon as the quarterback got his deal, linebacker Reuben Foster hit the headlines for the wrong reasons. Foster was arrested for alleged domestic violence and making threats with an assault weapon. No charges have been filed by county prosecutors yet.
Players who are headed to free agency next month include Hyde, Coyle, Reid, Johnson, Fusco, Lynch and Carradine. After signing his deal, Kilgore committed to working very hard in the coming season. Whether this will lead to the playoffs or to the Super Bowl, only time will tell.
