This new development comes in the backdrop of information that has been going around about the Broncos cornerback. The 49ers odds for next season highly depend on their strategies at the cornerback.
While he is most likely going to be free and available for new pastures, there are concerns that no teams are possibly looking to sign him up. The cornerback has a cap hit of $12 million, which puts him in a tight position where he might have to deal with the imminent possibility of being a free agent.
As for the San Francisco 49ers, much of the approximately $110 available for trade in the off-season might be spent on getting a much-needed quarterback. The 49ers have been keen on getting Jimmy Garoppolo on the team. If this happens, Garoppolo will land a long-term contract in San Francisco and probably end up being one of the highest earners in the league.
It is only after this development that the 49ers will look into other priority areas like signing up a cornerback. Dontae Johnson did not impress during the season leading to him being dropped for the new season. The 49ers are thus keen on getting a new signing to address the current challenge.
There are many sides to Aqib Talib. His reputation includes being involved in a couple of controversial antics outside the field. He had for instance short himself sometime back in 2016, even though he managed to pull through and impress on the field. He has also been involved in a brawl with a Raiders player, causing him to be removed from one game. Despite these controversies, his abilities on the field speak for themselves. He went on to achieve his fourth successive Pro-Bowl in the tumultuous season and he is already on his fifth as of the concluded season.
The stat sheet also looks great for this cornerback. With over 100 pass breakups, 34 interceptions during his career, and the right physical build; he is a great option for the 49ers. At Denver, his contribution has been equally great over the last couple years. He was a key factor when the team lifted the Super Bowl in 2015. 49ers have had a poorly ranked defense throughout 2017 and they desperately need to fix it.
The 49ers have consistently demanded a good off-the-field record from players. This has especially been emphasized since John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan refocused the coaching assignment towards a wholesome course. Talib might thus not be the number one choice for this team if his antics are to be considered.
The 49ers have a capable personnel team that includes Adam Peters. Both Peters and Lynch are quite familiar with their counterparts at Broncos and they are definitely in a good position to gather as much information about Talib should they need to. In the event that Talib is not considered, his alternatives include Rams’ Trumaine Johnson, Cardinals’ Justin Bethel, and Patriots’ Malcolm Butler.
