Niners Plan To Give Garoppolo Long-Term Deal
When the San Francisco 49ers sent a second round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft to New England for Jimmy Garoppolo, the team was hoping Garoppolo would be their answer at the quarterback position, which would save them from using a first round pick on an untested rookie coming out of college.

When the San Francisco 49ers sent a second round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft to New England for Jimmy Garoppolo, the team was hoping Garoppolo would be their answer at the quarterback position, which would save them from using a first round pick on an untested rookie coming out of college.
After the trade, the 49ers odds for next season didn't change because Garoppolo sat on the bench for a few weeks while he learned the 49ers offense, allowing C.J. Beathard to lead the team to their first win of the season.
After their first win, fans were calling on head coach Kyle Shanahan to stick with Beathard as they were hoping the team would finish with one of the worst records in the league and get a top 5 pick as a result.
However, Shanahan, who did a great job of not letting the team settle for mediocracy, ignored the calls to tank and finally gave Garoppolo his first start of the season with five games left on the schedule.
What happened next was the most welcomed surprise in 49er land in a very long time. Garoppolo came in and immediately led the 49ers to their second win of the season. The next week, he did the same thing again.
After two consecutive wins, there were still people doubting how good the former Patriots backup really was, claiming the wins weren't a big deal because they came against teams that weren't going to the playoffs.
Garoppolo was quick to silence those doubters as well, leading the 49ers to wins over the Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars in consecutive weeks. Since both teams are still in the playoffs, nobody can say he didn't beat any good teams this year.
The win over the Titans in particular showed how calm and collected Garoppolo is on the field. After the Titans took the lead in the final minutes of the game, Garoppolo, was caught by the sideline cameras and mics coaching up his teammates and telling his receivers which way the defense will play their routes.
He calmly led the team to a comeback win, solidifying his position as the team leader. The jaguars game was also a great one for Garoppolo, who picked apart one of the best defenses in the league this year.
After the game, several teammates told reporters they wish they had Garoppolo all season because they would have made the playoffs if they did. Since they didnâ€t, they have to settle for having him for all 16 games next season.
Since the 49ers know they don't need a quarterback in the draft, they will turn their attention on signing Garoppolo, who became an unrestricted free agent after the season.
The 49ers will offer Garoppolo a long-term contract that will make him one of the highest paid players in the league. They will also make the contract a team friendly one like the one they signed Colin Kaepernick to because despite being undefeated as a starter, Jimmy G only has seven career stats, which isn't enough to back up the Brinks truck for.
If they can't come to an agreement, 49ers fans don't have to worry because the team can use the franchise tag on him like the Redskins did with Kirk Cousins.
