The San Francisco 49ers started the season as one of the worst teams in the NFL, but now, they are probably the one team nobody wants to face thanks to the arrival of Jimmy Garoppolo, who has the team looking like a contender despite their record.

After three consecutive wins, the 49ers odds for next game will have them as a betting favorite against the Jacksonville Jaguars thanks to Garoppolo’s 3-0 record as the team’s starter. The 49ers, who started the season 0-9 and looked like they would be competing with the Cleveland Browns for the worst record in the league, have now won four of their last five games.
On Sunday, Garoppolo made his home debut for the 49ers, and this time around, he led the team to a comeback win over the Tennessee Titans, thanks to six field goals by Robbie Gould.
On the final drive of the game, the 49ers started at their own 25 yard line with a little over a minute left in the game. Apparently, it was more than enough time for Garoppolo, who got the team in field goal range in only three plays.
After leading the team to another win, which has been rare in Santa Clara over the past three seasons, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Garoppolo has been as good as advertised, if not better. The coach also said he enjoys working with his new quarterback and hopes their success continues.
With the loss, the Titans, who are competing with the Jacksonville Jaguars for the AFC South title, fell two games behind the Jaguars in the division race with only two games left to play. The good news for the Titans is the Jaguars also get to face the 49ers before they meet in the season finale in week 17.
Before the 49ers went on their game-winning drive, Garoppolo and his teammates were confident they would be able to move the ball because the 49ers have been very good in their two-minute offense.
As they suspected, they were able to move the ball with ease giving Gould a chance to win the game for the team.
After the game, left tackle Joe Staley gave Garoppolo a lot of credit for his poise during the game because the team hadn’t faced the kind of pressure they faced against the Titans, who did a lot of blitzing.
Garoppolo faced a blitz on 26 of 46 drop backs, going 16 of 23, 214 yards and finishing with a 98.8 passer rating against the Blitz.
For his part, Garoppolo welcomed the blitz because he said it created holes he was able to take advantage of in the defense. After the game, Titan s coach Mike Mularkey was also impressed by Garoppolo’s poise, and credited him for making a lot of great plays under pressure.
Now that Garoppolo has shown he has the tools to be a franchise quarterback for the 49ers, expect the team’s front office to start working on a long term deal with the quarterback, who will be a free agent at the end of the season.
Once the team signs Garoppolo to a new deal, expect them to turn their focus on other areas on the team that need to be addressed.
