Pierre Garcon had a forced exit last season owing to his injury against the Philadelphia Eagles when the 49ers lost. Marquise Goodwin took over and his stats improved progressively. The targets, for instance, moved upwards to 7.4 from a previous 5.7 each game. Things also improved dramatically for Goodwin especially after the excellence of Jimmy Garoppolo at the center. The magic that came as a result of the two players cooperation saw Goodwin get the most impressive stats. Even though Goodwin was only on the field for a few games, the impact was visible.
The consistency between Goodwin and Garoppolo is not just inspirational. Ever since the two players started their campaign last season, it was evident that their chemistry was good. The reports coming out of the team recently have instigated that the great performance from Goodwin is set two continue. He has reportedly been impressive in his first few weeks of training. As a receiver, Goodwin has been touted as having improved his route running as well as his hand techniques.
During an 11 of 11 with the team, both Goodwin and Garoppolo showed great skill as the team made two touchdowns. One of them was a magnificent 75-yard touchdown. The recent reports only confirm what was proposed last year - the Goodwin is the best receiver for Garoppolo.
One of the major things that will excite fans is the fact that the two players can connect on the deep balls. Last season, this was not the case. The potential that lies on this connection is thus huge. The prospects for the season will be high and the two players will most likely deliver. Garcon will not be completely sidelined though. Goodwin might be great on the ball but the physicality of Garcon will still be needed. Shanahan and Garcon have had some great moments on the field too. Garcon's age though is quickly catching up with him and this, coupled with the injury, will be problematic.
Goodwin has never really been the priority at the 49ers. The injury that ruled out Garcon though might just be the key to his success at the team. He has great potential and he only needs to prove himself on the field to bring everyone else to his side. The chemistry that Garoppolo also established with Goodwin was not achievable with Garcon. The opportunity that came as a result of Garcon's injury is thus unique. It is only a matter of time before the reports make their stand on the preferred receiver. Goodwin though has some great chances.
