The San Francisco 49ers haven't had all too good of a season, and they've consistently been ranked underdogs this season. In Week 15, things changed for them. According to MyBookie, the 49ers are considered a two-point favorite for their matchup against Tennessee Titans in San Francisco.
49ers vs. Titans
Sun 12/17 @ 4:25pm
Levi's® Stadium, Santa Clara, CA
The 49ers have had a run of good fortune, winning three of their last four games - two of them being consecutive road wins - with Garoppolo as the starting quarterback. The 49ers odds to beat the Titans don't seem unrealistic given their current form.
At the bookies and betting sites, the lines opened up as a toss-up, with most indicators pointing to a fifty-fifty outcome to the game. A few bookies had the 49ers at -1, with one putting them at +1. Eventually, however, things took a turn in favor of the 49ers as money moved in on the 49ers, pushing the line to two at most bookies. One outlet even had them fixed as high as 2.5.
The remarkable thing here is the fact that the 49ers haven't been a game favorite with the bookies since last season's matchup against the New York Jets where they were considered a field goal favorite at home. The San Francisco side was only considered the favorites for three of their games last season, with two of them being at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Jets, and the other one on the road against the Chicago Bears. Against the odds, the 49ers managed to lose all three games.
The Garoppolo Effect
The 49ers head to the game coming off of a confidence-boosting 26-16 win over the Houston Texans and a 15-14 victory over the Chicago Bears the week previous. What's put the pep back in the 49ers' step? All pointers indicate that the presence of Garoppolo in the starting quarterback position has sparked a change in the team's composure. The team is playing their games with a significantly higher sense of confidence in themselves, and it's looking as though it isn't misplaced - they look like a much better side than what they were earlier in the season.
The Titans, on the opposing end, dropped to 8-5 following their loss on the road against the Arizona Cardinals. That defeat saw them stand one game behind the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC South standings. The Titans side is still in a position to remain hopeful of making it to the postseason, but a spotty track-record doesn't inspire confidence that they will make it very far if and when they get there.
Last week saw the 49ers line inch down to 1.5 by the time of kickoff, and this can mostly be attributed to the efforts of Jimmy Garoppolo in reshaping people's views about the 49ers. Attaining two-point favored status is well and good, but when we take into consideration the fact that home teams will usually be given 2.5 up to three points, it fades a little. It means that should the game have been at a neutral site, the 49ers would have been the underdogs once again. The point of it all is, the 49ers team looks like it's in a good place right now, so let's watch and see if they can keep it up.
