Jimmy Garoppolo Performance Remarkable Despite Loss to Texans
In the recent preseason meeting between the 49ers and the Texans, San Francisco had to concede 16-13. This loss could be humiliating to the team, but not so much for the celebrated 49ers quarterback. Jimmy Garoppolo performance was impressive to say the least during the game. The quarterback managed to complete 10 out of 12 passes for over 136 yards. This also included a 2 yard touch down throw to Trent Taylor to cap the game in the opening minutes. Garoppolo's final series was ended by an interception. Head coach Shanahan was not very impressed with how the game ended. The coach stated that he wished they would have stayed on the field longer but a penalty ended their hopes of pushing through.

During the game, center Weston Richburg had 25 yards of penalties; coupled with a conduct issue when he openly expressed his anger to a match official after he was flagged. It is safe to say that the head coach was more pleased with the initial drive. Garoppolo on the third play placed a 40-yard pass to Marquise Goodwin a wide receiver on 3rd and 7th; this clearly established a working theme. On the 3rd and 4th downs, Garoppolo was able to complete all the 7 passes for 106 yards. One of the plays included a 24 yard throw to full-back Kyle Juszczyk and this happened on the starting drive.
The 49ers quarterback ensured an amazing pass protection that kept him afloat. Garoppolo capped the ensuing play by throwing to slot receiver Taylor who took over the campaign in a bid to punish the Texans. Note that Taylor had to miss his first session of training camp owing to injury. He underwent back surgery and leading up to the game, the slot receiver was slowly regaining his form. During the joint drills with Houston, Taylor had 6 catches during the first drill. Taylor is known mainly for his speed and a sense of swiftness.
In the next 10 plays of the second drive, the 49ers moved a total of 60 yards. The play that followed saw Richburg called for these penalties. This meant that the Niners had to lose 25 yards which culminated into the loss of the ball. In the next play, Garoppolo then passed to wideout Dante Pettis; and this pass was intercepted by conerback Johnson Bademosi. According to head coach Shanahan, Pettis should have caught the ball and in this regard, he placed a lot of blame on the rookie second-round pick. The coach went ahead to express his disappointment in the conduct of Richburg. Shanahan termed the unsportsmanlike-conduct of the player 'unacceptable'.
It is worth noting that in the beginning half of the pre season opener, the 49ers lost up to 6 core players to injury. In this game, no injuries were recorded in the first 30 minutes. However, the second half saw backup-guard Erik Magnuson suffer a hamstring injury. Sealing the 49ers loss was when Braxton Miller threw a touchdown pass of 41 yards to Vyncint Smith with just under 30 seconds left in the game. The Texans may have taken the victory but the impressive play put up by Garoppolo was hard to ignore.
