For the first time in four years, the San Francisco 49ers have heightened hope of progressing to the playoffs in the 2018 season. In 2014, their star player NaVorro Bowman had to stay out due to a knee injury. At that point, they were coming off an appearance in the NFC title game. Fans were still optimistic that they would soldier on and head to the playoffs. However, all was not well and from that point, one losing streak after another formed a 3-year dry spell for the team. The new season brings a new opportunity for the team to contend afresh in the ever-bruising league.
Last season saw an injection of new life into the team courtesy of the formidable Jimmy Garoppolo. With this celebrated quarterback, it may not come as a surprise when the 49ers reach playoffs. In fact, oddsmakers are highly optimistic with a good amount of wagers placed on the team this season. The total wins set for the team are 8.5 or 9 wins all depending on the sportsbook you use. It is also good to mention that the 49ers are in the top five NFC teams in the Super Bowl odds.
Recently, ESPN evaluated all 32 NFL teams in a bid to determine the betting trends. The over/under is 8.5 for the 49ers and their actual odds to take the Lombardi Trophy is 20-1. Their conference title odds are at 10-1. When it comes to their divisional odds, they are at 5-2. All the above numbers are from the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook. In the review, it was noted that the 49ers have been favored in a total of 48 games since Jim Harbaugh joined Michigan. In this regard, they were favored five times. Last season, the team was favored twice under Kyle Shanahan.
The two times are when the 49ers met the Los Angeles Rams on the field and when they took on the Tennessee Titans. In 2016, the team was favored three times. This is when they played home games against the Arizona Cardinals, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their road game against Chicago Bears. In all the above meetings, the team was under Chip Kelly. Under head coach Jim Tomsula, there were however no favors in any game. Since going 8-8 in 2014, the team seemed to have been revived in the last season where they recorded their best win/loss record 6-10.
They won their last five games in the season after Garoppolo seemed to work his magic. According to the lines released by CG Technology in May, there is a lot of optimism from the general public about the 49ers in the coming regular season. The lines show that the team is favored in nine of their 15 games. Examples include road games against the Buccaneers and the Cardinals. Anything can happen in the game but if the team can reach or go beyond last season's ATS mark, their total mark for the win would be reached. This will in turn bring them closer to the playoffs on their campaign to the top title. With a solid roster full of determined minds, the 49ers might just deliver their best performance yet going forward.
